a Proverbs

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 1:7

So the word is where we turn to gain our wisdom. It is through scripture that God speaks to us and teaches us. You are a fool when you turn from the Lords teachings and try to figure things out on your own.

Even so that when we don't take advice from others that we may be a fool at times. It is easy to go around thinking that we are the ones that are always right about things and forget what other people have to offer. A good application for this is being a mom. Sometimes we think that everything we do is the right way and the only way. And when someone offers advice to us, we turn our heads and think to ourselves, mind your own business.

God tells us that we are fools to not listen and consider what others are telling us. Regardless on if you decide to change your ways, the least you can do is listen and be appreciative.

And remember that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. It is first that we must believe in Him in order to gain knowledge and have your heart in the right place.

Jonah

Been going through Jonah at church the past month. Today I read Jonah 4:5-11

Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city.
So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort.
And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant. But God appointed a worn when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it withered.
When the sun came up God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying " Death is better to me than life."
Then God said to Jonah, " Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?" And he said " I have good reason to be angry, even to death."
Then the Lord said, " You had compassion on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight.
"Should I not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?"

Jonah was waiting for the Lord to do something to the city of Nineveh. He had just gone and told them in the previous chapter that the Lord was going to cast his anger on them because of their wicked way of life. But in chapter 3:10 it states, that He (God) did not do it. The Lord answered the cry out of the city and He forgave them. Yet, there Jonah sits in the next chapter waiting to see what the almighty God was going to do to them.

Is there ever a time that we sit and watch and wonder what is going to happen to the person who is living in darkness or who has done wicked against you. I feel like I do this with my spouse sometimes. I recognize his faults and wonder what kind of punishment should be played out ( maybe I will just ignore him for a few hours, eat some ice cream, go spend some money) whatever it may be is not how we should respond. God would say forgiveness is key. That is easy to write but very hard to do. Especially when people repent, we should be Christ like and model the grace the Lord has for us when we repent to Him. We should be this example on earth for our chidren, our husbands; but most importantly remember to daily repent to our God.

None of us are perfect and repentness doesn't just come that one time you give your life to the Lord and accept Him as your Savior. Repentness is continuous- because we all are sinners. Recognize His grace upon you when you have done something sinful and ask for repentness; and be sure your responding as the Lord does to you toward others in your life.

Psalm 90:17

Back to this verse:

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Isn't it interesting that this verse repeats itself. I wonder why that is. Sometimes we need to say things more than once to get our point across to our children; maybe that is why this is repeated. It is giving us the assurance that if when we apply ourselves to loving and serving God that we WILL be confirmed of our work. We will know that what we are doing in this life is exactly what God wants us to be doing.
Everyday the laundry and the dirty dishes are staring at me and I have to remind myself that yes "confirm the work of my hands." I recognize that the Lord has givin me this wonderful family and that this is the work that comes with it. I need to be aware of my attitude toward my work daily. Making sure that my hands are acting just as the Lord would want; your hands will reflect all that is going on your heart. Pretty interesting to think about; and scary.
Think back over the past couple of days how many times you use your hands. To cook, clean, grasp your children, heal a boo boo, go to the store, protect your kids from crossing the street... the list goes on and on. Did your hands reflect that of a person loving and pursing Christ or was it the opposite? Were you dragging your child across the parking lot because they were not behaving, where you slamming your dishes around or not even doing them at all, were you carrying shopping bags instead of grocery bags knowing that your money is not being spend wisely.
Let the Lord confirm the work of your hands; that means first loving your God and having the desire to let go and give Him your life; let go and give Him your life.

All about Psalm 90

The guest speaker stood at the podium today beginning with her explanation of her struggle in trying to figure out what she should talk to a group of moms about. Prayer she said brought her to Psalm 90.

Psalm 90: 13-17

Do return, O Lord; how long will it be?
And be sorry for Your servants.
Satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us,
And the years we have seen evil.
Let Your work appear to Your servants
And Your majesty to their children.
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
And confirm for us the work of our hands;
Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

Listening to her speak was like the Lord was standing right smack in front of me... saying hellooo wake up Brooke. I am talking to you. All the struggles over the past couple of days are beginning to bundle up and expload inside of me. Future decisions that I like to take into my own hands that make me a lil OCD at times. Like how many kids should we have, am a choosing the right schools for my kids, is this where we should live forever; the list goes on and I sat yesterday in the silence at nap time thinking that it would be good to pull out my bible but so boring. So many times of previous attempts to get in the word and my mind starts to wander in different directions over things that are "more important."
Wake up! The speaker clearly tells the moms, the Word, IS what is most important. This is your foundation for everything else that goes on your life. If you get in the Word, learn your wisdom from the Word; everything then will be takin care of. You will then know how to respond to your child who is out of control and screaming bloody murder over her "hurt knee" that her brother accidently bumped getting into the car; you will have peace over the stage of life that you are in and where you live and the choices that you are making.

Satisfy us in the morning O Lord with your lovingkindness ( His compassion),
that we may sing for Joy and be glad all our days.

When you start your day with the Lord ( whenever that time of the day is)- in return you have JOY and GLADNESS. What mom wouldn't ask for this everyday. Givin that some days are yes, going to be difficult, the way you react is going to be mirror what is going on your heart.

Yesterday I completely lost it with my daughter over something that she was clearly being disobedient about. I told her to stay in a certain spot outside so that I could get her brother's pictures done. She of course didn't listen so I yelled at her. How would I have reacted if I would have spent time with God yesterday? I truly believe that the Lord would prob have told me, this isn't the time to take the pictures, wait. Right now, be with your children and enjoy each other.

I truly believe that my dission making is going to be ratically changed now that I am commiting myself to read scripture EVERY day. Not only am I going to read it, I am going to blog it! I figure that I can't be the only mom out there who is stuggling to spend time with the Lord during our busy life's of raising children. And I figure maybe through my writting, I can help moms who aren't sure what to read when they sit and open the bible. It is a huge and sometimes over whelming book. And I am by no means a pro at this, so we can do it together.
I should be pro by now. Maybe many of you think the same thing and are a bit embarassed about it because we put on the happy face at church, hear the preacher speak of the importance of a quiet time, yet we sit there and smile, ashammed at heart knowing that we should be doing more. Well, here we go, let's do this.

Each day I will write a passage of scripture. ( Sometimes all we have in a moment of down time is our phones; which thanks to technology gives us the internet at our fingertips) Then I will blog what I have gotten out of it and probally a lil bit of me putting my struggles into words. My prayer is that we would be Refreshed each day with the Word. This then will help us be the better mom that we all long to be.
